WOMEN IN TANGO| Seminar by Marisol Morales

Looking forward to meeting you in an special meeting for women and anyone else who is interested in the women role in Tango. This Seminar is inspired in TANGO as a cultural transmission from older generation to the young.

"Tango is an inheritance"

The story is known that the boys in the golden age of tango got together to practice in neighborhood clubs to develop and learn the secrets of this wonderful tango dance.

Since at that time they could not meet with women, inevitably the boys began to meet with each other for training for the weekend dances.

Many of them chose the carnivals as their debut date, it was easier to mix among many people and manage to go out on the dance floor a little more hidden and not be seen with the first mistake.

The youngest men first had to play the role of a woman, they learned while the others leader their steps for them, they had to let themselves to be move by there other. Therefore, when learning to dance tango they inevitably learned both roles.

When we learned about this story we couldn't help but wonder, and how did the women do it?

They did not meet in clubs, but each terrace, patio or dining room could be transformed into a dance floor where they could share their knowledge with each other.  The "yeites" (tricks) of dancing the tango were transmitted from older sisters to younger ones, from aunts to nieces and between friends.

In the case of women, the most experienced one had to know the role of the one who guides in order to be able to transmit this social and popular dance as an inheritance to the little ones.

There is a beauty in this role because you receive and lessen to the other, and it is much more active than what you might think. Is a big responsibility, and is related to the art of being a milonguera.

I learned to observe the wisdom of these milongueras with so much experience.  I saw them dance with the younger ones who were making their debut in the milonga.  And with the greatest subtlety they were the great protectors of the dance floor and in their embrace as women containing with love they managed to make that young dancer lose his fears in that powerful embrace and take him into the dance, leading him the way, letting him dance for the first time.
